TENDONITIS

Tendonitis

Women suffering knee pain from tendonitis during sports activity outdoors

Tendonitis is the inflammation or irritation of a tendon, which is a thick, fibrous cord that attaches  muscle to bone. This condition causes pain and tenderness just outside a joint and can affect any  tendon in the body, but it commonly occurs around the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and heels.  Tendonitis typically results from repetitive motion, overuse, or sudden injury

Common Types of Tendonitis:

  • Achilles Tendonitis: Affects the Achilles tendon, connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone.
  • Patellar Tendonitis (Jumper’s Knee): Affects the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shinbone.
  • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Affects tendons on the outside of the elbow.
  • Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Affects tendons on the inside of the elbow.
  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis: Affects tendons in the shoulder.
  • De Quervains Tenosynovitis: Affects tendons in the thumb.

Do you suspect you have Tendonitis? Here are some common symptoms to look out for:

  • Pain: Often described as a dull ache, especially when moving the affected limb or joint.
  • Tenderness: Increased sensitivity to touch around the affected tendon.
  • Swelling: Mild swelling or thickening of the tendon.
  • Stiffness: Reduced range of motion in the affected joint.
  • Weakness: Weakness in the affected limb.
