Trapezius Stretch: Relieve Neck and Shoulder Tension

If you experience neck stiffness, shoulder tension or upper back discomfort, a trapezius stretch can provide simple, effective relief. The trapezius muscle spans your upper back and neck and helps support movements involving your shoulders and head. Regular stretching can improve flexibility, reduce muscle tightness and complement your wider approach to musculoskeletal health.

How to Perform a Trapezius Stretch

Start by sitting or standing with your back straight and shoulders relaxed. Slowly tilt your head towards your right shoulder without lifting the shoulder. You should feel a gentle stretch along the left side of your neck and upper shoulder. Hold the position for around 20 to 30 seconds, then return your head to the centre. Repeat on the opposite side.

For another variation, gently turn your head towards one shoulder before tilting your chin slightly towards your chest. Keep the movement controlled and avoid pulling your head with your hand. Stretching should feel comfortable rather than painful. Stop if you experience sharp pain, dizziness, numbness or tingling.

When Should You Stretch Your Trapezius?

Many people benefit from gentle trapezius stretches after spending long periods at a desk, driving or using a phone. Incorporating a few stretches into your daily routine can help maintain neck and shoulder mobility. However, persistent or recurring discomfort may indicate an underlying issue that requires professional assessment.
